As Canada is renowned as a hub of digital innovation, being home to some of the World’s most innovative software as a service (SAAS) and AI companies, and is generally seen as one of the most advanced digital nations, you’d expect its insurance sector to be no different. And in that regard, given that referral works so well in insurance, and in particular for North American insurance companies, and indeed for insurers globally, you’d expect to see Canadian insurers leading the way. But as you’ll see from our research below, there’s definitely room for more innovative marketing strategies among Canadian insurers.

Being the global leading provider of enterprise referral programs, we’re immensely proud of our Canadian roots and the fact that we’re Canada’s leading referral and reward provider. So we’re taking a closer look at how Canadian companies across multiple leading industries are embracing Reward and Referral Marketing as the key alternative to search and social marketing. We’ve already explored some of the best referral programs in Canadian telecoms, and now we’re taking the microscope to the insurance sector.

Referral and reward programs are indispensable in today’s competitive landscape for attracting and retaining customers. Globally, an impressive 95% of consumers have participated in referral programs over the past year, indicating a strong preference for brands that offer the ability to recommend to friends and family. Recent research has also shown that referred-in customers are more valuable than those from any other source, not only due to the fact that they spend more and stay longer, but that they are also more likely to refer in more customers themselves.

Interestingly, our Reward Revolution research found that while cash based rewards are popular everywhere, Canadian consumers when asked to rank which gift cards were most likely to encourage a referral opted for cards from supermarket and grocery, and electronics chains, with the top five named brands being Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Tim Hortons and Best Buy. And interestingly, our Referral Codebreakers research found that the channels which were the most effective for notifying policyholders about an insurance referral program were email, bills, texts, notifications, app notifications, which is not surprising given that policyholders probably have little need to keeping coming back to the insurer’s website after having taken out a policy.

Here’s a summary of the main referral programs we found available in the Canadian market at the time of writing – if we’ve missed one, please let us know.

However, in truth we expected to find more, and more sophisticated examples as we can see in other programs across the globe and, in particular, more examples of programs with leading insurers – you’ll have seen that many of the programs above are operated by brokers. To us it’s clear that there’s room to grow and innovate in referral marketing in Canadian insurance, particularly as referral marketing is already developed in many other sectors across Canada.
