Why 3rd Party & Monetary Rewards Outshine Discounts and Bill Credits

In very competitive  industries like insurance, telecoms, and energy, acquiring new customers has almost become a competitive sport. And while traditional customer acquisition incentives, like discounts and bill credits, were once effective, they are rapidly losing their appeal with today’s consumers. That’s because those consumers increasingly seek more than just financial savings as an incentive; instead they increasingly desire value, exceptional experiences, and flexibility. This shift in consumer expectations has brought 3rd party gift cards and monetary rewards to the forefront, revolutionizing customer acquisition strategies.

The Limitations of Traditional Rewards

Discounts and bill credits, though familiar, are losing their effectiveness with the modern consumer. Their impact on creating lasting customer relationships is often minimal. And these traditional customer acquisition methods, while offering immediate cost savings, often fail to leave a memorable impression and suffer from diminshing returns – after a while an extra free month on top the several you already earned just loses its appeal. A study by McKinsey & Company revealed that while discounts can drive initial sales, they do little to promote long-term loyalty and, even worse, can affect the consumer’s appreciation of the brand’s value. Brands engaging in constant price wars attract customers whose loyalty is as fleeting as social media trends, ready to jump ship for the next brand offering a discount. Unlike these staple yet uninspiring methods, innovative rewards offer a refreshing alternative that captures customer interest and loyalty more effectively.

The Appeal of 3rd Party Gift Cards and Money

3rd party gift cards and monetary rewards on the other hand can offer an altogether more appealing incentive. Our recent and comprehensive Reward Revolution research found that while cash payments (whether to a bank account, Paypal or debit card) were the most popular reward across all age groups, digital gift cards and, particularly for younger demographics, digital subscriptions or gaming credits were also popular. In fact, our research found that on average, consumers expect to receive a choice of between 3 to 4 rewards for making a referral. And whereas cash is fungible, and often quickly forgotten about once it’s in a purse or wallet or paid into a bank account, a gift card, particularly an experiential gift card, is much more likely to be associated with the brand that gave the consumer the card. It’s also due to the effect of mental accounting, where a gift card is more likely to be spent on a hedonistic (and pleasurable) experience, whereas cash might just be spent on groceries or a bill. And, in addition, when customers use their gift cards, they often become inadvertent brand ambassadors, a form of word-of-mouth promotion that is both effective and cost-efficient.

Impact on Customer Acquisition and Quality

Integrating 3rd party gift cards and cash rewards can significantly impact customer acquisition strategies and business goals. The Incentive Research Foundation reports that non-cash rewards are more effective in achieving long-term business objectives than cash rewards alone. These rewards attract a broader customer base, contributing to a more diverse and engaged clientele. For example, one of our long standing telecommunications clients reported a 15% increase in new customer sign-ups after implementing a 3rd party gift card program, illustrating the tangible impact of this approach.

Long-Term Customer Relationships and Brand Perception

As mentioned above, unlike discounts and bill credits (and to a lesser extent, cash payouts),  3rd party rewards can transform transactional interactions into memorable experiences, that tend to foster emotional connections with customers. This emotional connection can in turn make customers into enthusiastic brand advocates, particularly in the case where they themselves have been referred to the brand and received a reward. A case study from a leading insurance provider showed that customers who received 3rd party rewards demonstrated a 30% higher retention rate over two years compared to those who received traditional discounts.

Operational and Strategic Advantages

Implementing 3rd party rewards is operationally streamlined and efficient. These rewards are easier to manage than the complexities of discounts and bill credits and don’t require integration with your checkout and payment systems. Strategically, this approach also allows for creative partnerships and co-marketing opportunities. For instance, an energy company partnering with an eco-friendly brand for gift card rewards can not only provide a unique customer reward but also align the energy brand with corporate social responsibility goals. The flexibility of 3rd party rewards also enables companies to adapt their marketing strategies effectively, responding quickly to market trends and customer preferences.

Conclusion

The shift from traditional discounts and bill credits to innovative 3rd party rewards is a transformative step in customer acquisition. This strategic change aligns with the dynamic preferences of modern consumers, focusing on the overall experience rather than just the product. The future of customer engagement is in the realm of 3rd party rewards, promising not just customer satisfaction but long-term loyalty and significant brand growth.

It’s time to innovate the customer reward strategy with 3rd party rewards, a move that promises to exceed customer expectations and secure a leading position in the modern marketing landscape. Get in touch to join the rewards revolution.
