# Referral Is Already Influencing Insurance Decisions. Most Insurers Simply Aren’t Capturing It.

The UK insurance market has never been more competitive.

Consumers can compare dozens of providers in minutes, switching between motor, home, travel, life and pet insurers with little more than a few clicks. Comparison sites have made pricing increasingly transparent, while insurers continue to invest heavily in advertising, digital acquisition and customer retention to stand out in a crowded market.

Yet despite these investments, one of the industry’s most influential acquisition channels often receives far less attention than it deserves: **Existing customers**.

More specifically, existing customers recommending their insurer to someone they trust.

Insurance is different from many other consumer purchases. Customers aren’t simply choosing a product—they’re choosing a company they hope will support them when something goes wrong. That means trust carries enormous weight. When renewal arrives, someone buys a new car, moves home or shares a positive claims experience, conversations about insurance happen naturally between friends, families and colleagues. Those recommendations often influence decisions far more effectively than traditional advertising because they arrive with something marketing can never fully replicate: **personal credibility**.

Our latest study of 1,000 UK insurance customers suggests these conversations are already happening at a significant scale. The opportunity for insurers isn’t creating advocacy from scratch. It’s making existing advocacy easier to capture, reward and measure.

## **Referral Already Exists. The Opportunity Is Activation.**

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding referral programmes is that they create customer advocacy.

The research suggests something rather different.

Across the UK, 46% of insurance customers say they have already recommended their insurer to somebody they know. That is a remarkable level of existing advocacy for a category often viewed as highly transactional.

But goodwill alone doesn’t automatically become action.

Only 29% say they would actively recommend their insurer without receiving a reward. Introduce a limited-time referral incentive, however, and willingness to refer rises sharply to 70%, while 65% say they would be likely to join a referral programme within the next six months.

That tells us something important.

The challenge isn’t convincing satisfied customers that their insurer deserves recommending. Many already believe that. The challenge is giving them a reason to act while the conversation is still happening.

Behavioral economists have understood this principle for years. People rarely avoid positive actions because they disagree with them. More often, they simply delay them. Referral behaves in much the same way. Customers intend to recommend their insurer, but without a timely prompt those intentions often disappear into everyday life.

Limited-time referral campaigns don’t manufacture advocacy. They activate customers who were already willing to recommend.

## **Trust Still Sits At The Heart Of Every Recommendation**

Insurance recommendations carry a level of responsibility that many consumer categories simply don’t.

Recommending a restaurant or streaming service involves relatively little personal risk. Recommending an insurer is different. Customers are effectively putting their own judgement behind a decision that could affect someone else’s financial security during an accident, burglary, medical emergency or major claim.

That helps explain why referral programmes cannot rely on incentives alone.

The strongest reward in the world won’t persuade customers to recommend a provider they don’t genuinely trust.

Instead, referral programmes amplify existing customer confidence. Positive claims experiences, transparent communication, responsive customer service and reliable cover create the trust that makes recommendations possible. Rewards simply encourage customers to share that confidence more often.

For insurers, referral should therefore be viewed as an extension of customer experience rather than a standalone marketing campaign.

## **Different Markets Present Different Referral Opportunities**

One of the clearest themes emerging from the research is that referral potential isn’t evenly distributed across the UK.

The South of England stands out as the strongest overall opportunity. Half of customers have already referred their insurer, 74% respond positively to limited-time referral offers and 69% say they would join a referral programme within the next six months. This combination of established advocacy and strong programme responsiveness makes the region particularly attractive for referral-led customer acquisition.

The Midlands present a different but equally valuable profile. Historic referral behaviour closely mirrors the national average, while willingness to participate in referral programmes remains consistently strong. Rather than relying on short-term promotional bursts, insurers may find the greatest success here through always-on referral programmes supported by periodic campaigns that encourage customers to act.

The North of England tells another story. Referral behaviour remains well established, but customers also display comparatively higher openness to switching following recommendations from people they trust. In this region, referral becomes as much about protecting existing customer relationships as acquiring new ones.

Scotland & Wales demonstrate a more loyalty-driven profile. Referral behaviour remains healthy, but stronger underlying customer retention suggests programmes should focus on reinforcing trust and long-term relationships alongside attractive incentives.

Northern Ireland perhaps presents the most strategically significant opportunity of all. Historic referral behaviour is slightly lower than elsewhere, yet customers display the highest recommendation-driven switching risk in the study. That means insurers operating in the region should think about referral not simply as an acquisition channel, but as an important part of defending existing customer relationships.

## **Urban Customers Offer Scale. Rural Customers Offer Loyalty.**

The same behavioural differences emerge when comparing settlement types.

Urban customers are the most referral-active audience in the research. More than half have already recommended their insurer, three quarters respond positively to limited-time campaigns and over seven in ten would consider joining a referral programme. Dense social networks, greater digital engagement and more frequent switching behaviour all contribute to making urban markets the fastest route to referral growth.

But that opportunity comes with risk.

Urban customers are also the most likely to switch insurers following a trusted recommendation, making referral programmes just as important for retention as they are for acquisition.

Rural customers present a contrasting picture. Historic referral activity is lower, but underlying loyalty is stronger. Here, referral programmes should focus less on aggressive promotional mechanics and more on reinforcing trust, community reputation and long-term customer value.

The implication is clear: a single national referral strategy is unlikely to unlock the market’s full potential. The strongest programmes will adapt messaging, incentives and campaign timing to different customer segments rather than assuming every audience behaves in the same way.

## **Simplicity Wins.**

The research also challenges several assumptions about what customers actually want from referral programmes.

Cash remains the most popular reward, closely followed by gift cards, while premium discounts perform less strongly than many insurers might expect. Customers appear to value flexibility over category-specific incentives.

Just as importantly, they value certainty.

Most respondents prefer smaller guaranteed rewards rather than larger conditional ones, while fast fulfilment consistently outperforms delayed payouts. Customers want to know exactly what they’ll receive, when they’ll receive it and how the referral process works.

That emphasis on simplicity extends beyond rewards themselves.

The biggest barrier to referral isn’t reward size. It’s confidence.

Thirty per cent of customers say they hesitate because they aren’t completely sure their insurer would be the right choice for somebody they know. At the same time, around 81% expect referral journeys to be extremely simple, while mobile sharing through WhatsApp and text messaging dominates preferred sharing channels.

The strongest programmes therefore reduce friction at every stage. Clear rewards, transparent mechanics, mobile-first sharing and fast fulfillment are likely to generate greater participation than increasingly generous incentives alone.

## **Referral Is Also Becoming A Retention Strategy**

Perhaps the most significant finding in the research has little to do with acquisition.

It concerns switching.

More than half of UK insurance customers (55%) say they would consider changing insurer if somebody they trusted recommended a competitor. Only 41% say they have no plans to leave their current provider.

Those figures fundamentally change the role of referral.

Historically, referral programmes have been viewed primarily as customer acquisition tools.

Increasingly, they are becoming competitive defence mechanisms.

Every recommendation made by one of your customers strengthens your position. Every recommendation made by someone else’s customer creates an opportunity for competitors to influence switching behaviour.

Referral is no longer operating separately from retention.

The two are becoming increasingly interconnected.

## **Final Thoughts**

For years, insurers have competed through pricing, product innovation and increasingly sophisticated marketing.

Those investments remain essential.

But this research suggests another competitive advantage is becoming increasingly important.

Recommendation.

Customers are already talking about their insurers. They are already sharing claims experiences, discussing renewals and helping friends navigate a complex market. Referral behaviour is not something insurers need to create—it already exists.

The opportunity is making those conversations visible.

The insurers that build simple, rewarding and frictionless referral experiences into the customer journey will be better positioned to acquire customers more efficiently, strengthen loyalty and reduce exposure to recommendation-driven switching.

Because in insurance, perhaps more than almost any other consumer category, the most persuasive marketing message is still one customer saying to another:

*“I’d recommend my insurer.”*
